One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Laughs, tears and everything in between.
The Hype
From TV appearances to awards season tip offs to a huge advertising campaign, this film has been everywhere. At first glance, the film doesn't really lend itself to a huge audience (a period film about a homophobic AIDs sufferer... hmmm), but I think the trailer was cut fantastically and really grabs your attention. I'm not a huge fan of overly-American films (usually a rodeo scene would be enough to put me off completely), but I was really, really excited to see this.
The Reality
I cried, I laughed and a literally felt every emotion that was shown on screen. Despite his flaws (homophobic hustler, anyone?) it's so easy to fall in love with main character Ron, and as the film goes on you really do start to feel everything he does. Jared Leto is incredible as Rayon, and the whole pace and tone of the film is just fantastic.
Looking Back
This has instantly sailed into my top 10 films of all time. I really hope Jared wins the Oscar for supporting actor - he really is incredible. And as much as I've backed Chiwetel Ejiofor for the best actor for the last month, I'm now massively torn back into indecision by Matthew. Fantastic fantastic film.
5/5 stars.
