August Films

Despite being a Curzon member, I never managed to get to the cinema as much as I'd like. Since the start of the year, I've only gone to watch about 18 films, which is waaaay off my one-film-a-week resolution I made back in January.

Yesterday was a bit of a lazy day, so I had some time to pop down to the Curzon Soho to watch Frances Ha. It had received some really good reviews, and sounded like quite a light-hearted watch. The film follows Frances, a 27-year old New Yorker who hasn't quite got her life together yet, as she laughs and (literally) dances through the week.

It is quite sweet, but perhaps a little bit too American for me. I'd still recommend seeing if you want to watch something feel-good. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I've still not had the chance to watch Blackfish, which I'm really annoyed about because it looks amazing. I'm not usually into documentaries, but I'm really drawn to the thriller-style tempo of this one.

Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature's extraordinary nature, the species' cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the mulit-billion dollar sea-park industry.

I'm also looking forward to seeing What Masie Knew (Onata Aprile looks adorable in it) which is out on 23rd August, and Upstream Colour (I love how powerful the trailer is, although am slightly worried that the film itself may be a tiny bit too pretentious)

What films have you enjoyed this month?
