I'm the sort of person who always likes to be doing something
new. I love to carried away by new things and really
go for them for a couple of weeks...before my attention begins to wander to something more shiny. I'm a chronic flitter.
I'm like this because I get bored easily. I find it really hard to sit still and well,
think still. My mind tumbles over things without really catching hold of anything...be it music, books, food, lifestyle choices, jobs, even people. I really really really like a lot of things, constantly... but there aren't many things that I keep to.
I think the biggest issue is that I don't have many goals. Even with big things I'm a bit of a do-now-think-later kind of person - I dived head-first into a career in London, and many of the choices I've made since that have been on a whim. What I need is something to AIM for.
I've been trying to be healthier and get fitter for a long time. I've tried so many different ways (and wasted SO much money signing up for gyms to only go once). I've swam, danced, ran, cycled, yoga-ed, meditated... avoided carbs, become vegetarian, counted calories. But as usual, my Monday morning good intentions suddenly seem a little yawnsome on a Thursday afternoon. And yet, I'm surprised when I've not lost any inches come Sunday. Div.
I think the biggest problem is that exercise is usually pretty expensive. The amazing classes that places like
Frame offer sound like so much fun (
80's Aerobics, anyone?), but are just a teeny bit too pricey to do all the time. What I need is something challenging, entertaining, cheap and most importantly,
long term.
So, here it is. By next summer, I want to be able to run 10k. Adventurous for someone who can't even really run to the end of the street, but I reckon I might just get there. Training won't just be about jogging (there's all sorts of stamina and strength exercises I can do too) and seeing myself run a tiny bit further each week might just be novel enough for me to keep going. I've signed up at my local
Fitness First, and I'm already looking forward to the days that I can run under those sunset skies at Clapham Common.
For an extra bit of motivation I'm going to display my 10k-ometer loud and proud in my sidebar... so you can shout at me if I give up. If you've got any tips for how to keep running exciting (I'm going to need them), then do share them below!
